Check out our new classroom look. This summer I was checking my Twitter feed and noticed some tweets about teachers making their classes "deskless". I was intrigued and did a little research on this idea. I decided that I would like to set up the class like an internet cafe. Notice the giant iPad with our class schedule in the last picture. I hope all of you are doing well. I would love it if you would stop by DTM sometime to see me. Please use this blog to keep in touch with me and your former classmates. I love hearing about what you are up to and of course like to know about your grades:)

OMG! Mrs. Elder you are so creative! I love how you started a twitter, your deskless room and that giant iPad! I am very busy with middle school, it is very different from Elementary school, so many classes and work! It is very easy but challenging at times. Sometimes I wish I was back in your class because of your creativity and your teaching skills. Your website is getting very crowded! So many memories! I almost forgot about this website until I remembered a question in class about my favorite teachers, then I thought about 5th grade with you and Mrs. Donnelly (Mrs. D). But overall, I miss elementary school and you.

Thanks Miriam. I wish you could be in my room again. What school are you attending? If you are at Southwestern you might see my friend and fellow iPad teacher, Mrs. Bennett.

Oh! Since you're taking all these pics and sharing them on here, why not make an instagram? You can be private and some of your students can like it (I know an average kid gets on social media, :) ). Or you can just share it to share it. Just an idea, that came in my head.

Miriam I am not surprised at your all A's. I am glad it is going well for you at Southwestern. I am loving school this year. I started this new thing called Passion time where students get to work on whatever they want for 40 min. two days a week. They have to make a passion project plan for the month and at the end tell the class what they have learned. This month I have students finding recipes and baking cookies to sell for Dragon Dollars, learning Spanish with an app, making comic books with an app, making iMovies about our class, writing a book and publishing it online, making models on Minecraft, learning origami, and learning how to use a microscope. It is so cool to see all of the new things everyone is learning- including me. I actually do have an instagram. I made one just so I could follow my daughter and keep track of her posts, but I really love my Twitter. You can follow us @dragonbytescafe. I like twitter because it seems more professional.

Omg Mrs. Elder time is flying, I thought it would only take a few days for me to reply but of course it took 2 weeks. I like the passion time idea, did you create it? Wow! Baking, cooking, Spanish and other productive activities?!? You're doing great!!!!!!!! I wish we had that much fun in middle school, it's so dull and boring to hear the teacher talk and get assignments all the time. And the worst part is that we do not get parties and fun time. I guess it's time to move on... right? Haha. Well, I will follow you on twitter :-).

I am glad you are getting used to middle school Miriam. I wish I could claim that I made up the idea of passion time. I heard about it on Twitter. Google started it by giving their employees 10% of their work week to work on anything they we're passionate about. It is also called genius hour in some schools. I think sometimes middle school and high school teachers should do some reading about how to make class more exciting. My husband is constantly thinking of new things like doing bike tricks to demonstrate physics and singing songs to help students remember steps in cell division. You should check out the kid president videos on YouTube. He says it is time for the world to stop being boring and be more awesome.

Hey Mrs. Elder! I also wish you could claim that you made the idea of passion time, that would get you some credit ;). Yes! Tell Mr. Elder to try those tricks and singing songs, middle school is no fun! I wish there weren't so many lectures, essays, and assignments! My English teacher works us so hard that we are starting an essay next week! But sooner or later this hard work will pay off :). I haven't updated my website in sooooo long but I need new ideas to make everything look super nice. Grades come out this Friday hopefully I get all A's again :). But, how are you doing and how is everything going?

Hi Miriam, I am doing well. I have had a student teacher this year. Her last day is on December 12th. It has been hard for me to not teach (especially the math), but it is nice to be able to help someone else learn. I am sorry middle school has not been too exciting. I love hard work, but I also know that it is important for students to actually enjoy coming to school. If you would like something fun to work on at home you should check out cafepress. It is a website that lets you set up your own online store for free. You can take pictures or design your own shirts, purses, bedspreads, (and almost anything). You can sell it from the website and they will send the product to the customer and a check to you with your profit. Tell your family I said hi and Merry Christmas.

Hi Miriam. I am doing well. I have a new job in the Flint Schools now. I am the Science Instructional Specialist. The great thing about that is that I get to work in all the schools. I will be at Southwestern on Tuesday this week. I will try to look you up. I am glad you are doing well. I saw your brother at Holmes the other day. See you soon!
